James Rodney Groom, 72, of Sulphur Springs passed away on Friday, July 24, 2015 at his home. Rodney was born on July 25, 1942 to William A. and Mary E. Groom in Jacksonville, Texas. Rodney met and would later marry Sandra Wherley in 1981. Rodney was a professional golfer and a lifetime member of the PGA. He was the assistant golf pro at the VanZandt Country Club; golf pro at the Palestine and Athens Country Clubs; and owed the Bellwood Golf Course in Tyler for over twenty-one years. Rodney was a laid back man of simple tastes and pleasures. He loved the game of golf and good friends. But his passion was his loved for his family. Rodney os preceded in death by his parents, William A. and Mary E Groom; brother, William C. Groom. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sandra Groom; sons, James R. Groom, Jr. and his wife Rachel, Sean Groom; daughter Erin Groom; sister Sandra Brown; as well as numerous extended family, friends and neighbors. He will truly be missed.
